He was reared and attended school in that area. When he became of age his parents gave him (350) three hundred fifty acres of land. He added more acreage to this on which he farmed, raised cattle and horses. He married Della B. Spurgors born January 19, 1866 and they had two children John and George Ms. Della died October 29, 1892. He later met and married Della Lee Crist on June 27, 1897, she was eighteen years of age born January 27, 1879. Della Lee was not only a loving stepmother and wife but was also interested in business. They later added a cotton gin to their farming and ranching business. This was a profitable move on their part. It kept the farmers in Navarro and surrounding counties from having to haul cotton a long distance to be processed. It could be processed and shipped from Navarro County. To this union there were seven children born in Rural Shade, Navarro County, Texas: Henry Roy (b. April 5, 1898), Fred Harris (b. 1900), Baby Girl died at birth 1902, Emma (b. February 22, 1904), Earl Edward (b. October 29, 1906), Annie Fay (b. September 17, 1908), and George Jackson (b. He sold his farm and business and moved his family by train to Midland, Midland County, Texas where he again became in- volved with farming and ranching. A son, Oscar Thurman was born May 1, 1914 in Midlan, Midland County, Texas. The family was unhappy in that part of the state and again they sold and moved to Montalba, Anderson County, Texas by train and lived there until the family purchased the Shaw Farm at Latexo,Houston County, Texas from H.J. Shaw and wife L.A. Shaw on December 3, 1918 for a sum of Four Thousand, Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars. This purchase included one hundred ninety acres of land, a large frame house, a log cabin and farming equipment. Again, the family farmed and ranched and had a peach orchard that produced peaches for sale. He installed a carbide light system in their home instead of using karosene lamps. He also had one of the first telephones installed in that area. He and his family were active in the Ephesus Baptist Church. He also served as a trustee on the school board at Latexo for several years and was active in politics which was a family tradition dating back to his great grandfather before him. He was also affiliated with the Democratic Party. He was a strong willed man and a devout Christian and a firm believer that a mans word and hand shake was as good as a signed legal document, if by chance it was proved otherwise then it was Katie bar the door because the old man was upset. He had strong convictions and believed in living by them, the first obligation being to God then family, country and community and that is the way he raised his family. A daughter, Eldiwease was born January 4, 1921 at Latexo, Houston County, Texas then on February 5, 1921, his wife Della Lee died.
