Alexander Shaver, Sr. was born in Louisiana in 1800. He married Eliza Masters. To this union were born seven children. Five were born in Louisiana and two were born in Texas. They were Cynthia Ann, John Wesley, Almedia, Susan, Elizabeth, Sallie, and Alexander Shaver, Jr., who was born in 1847, the year his father died. Alexander Shaver, Jr. grew up in the San Pedro Community, east of Grapeland, and married Julia Tyer. She was born on June 20, 1847 and died June 11, 1921. Alexander preceded her in death on January 28, 1920. They had ten children. The first, Eliza and the third, Annie, died at an early age. Their second child, William Alexander was a farmer. He married Julia Denson. They had seven children, Samuel Joseph who owned and operated a sawmill and was a builder, in the Latexo area. He marrie Willie Davidson. Their second son was Earnest, ‘Elmer’. He died at an early age. Their third son was Edell, who married Edith Oliver. He was a farmer. Earl Berthram was their fourth son. He married Cora Mae Hague. He served in World War II, taught school in West Texas, was a postal worker in the Grapeland area and delivered ice on two routes. Eugene Alexander was their fifth son. He married Mary Western Hague. He was a farmer. Eula Mae was the sixth child. She married Carl Spruill. Evelyn was the seventh child. She married Arlon Oliver. She was head nutritionist for thirty years at the Latexo School Cafeteria. Wesley was the fourth child and second son of Alexander and Julia Shaver. He married Laura Louise ‘Lula’ Ivey. He farmed and worked at a sawmill. He and Lula had four children that died in infancy. Three lived to adulthood. Henry married Luna Brown. He was a farmer and worked for a sawmill. Lillie Odessa married Jim Woodard Gentry who was a farmer. Wessie Opal married Woodrow Stowe. He owned dump trucks and was a dirt contractor. Alexander and Julia’s fifth child, and third son, was Jim. He married Onselo Knight. They lived in west Texas. Their children were Otis, Barbara, Ruby, and Ida. The sixth child and fourth son of Alexander and Julia was George. His first wife was Nannie Lou Weisinger. They had one son, George Willis. Nannie Lou died when George Willis was one month old. He later married Hattie Williams and they had four children, who were Graden, who married Mattie D. Allen, Mack married Ruth Colkins, Iva Louise ‘Tinsey’, who married J. D. Kyle and Faye who married Jack Ferguson. Their seventh child, and first daughter to live to adulthood, was Hanna, ‘Sis’. She married Joe Johnson. They had two children, Annie Corene who married Ed Bowdoin. They divorced and she later married Tom Rambo. Wesley Lee Johnson was their son. He married Bertha Bell McQueen. The eighth child, and fifth son of Alexander and Julia was Isaac Hamilton, ‘Babe’, Shaver. He owned and operated a sawmill east of Grapeland and later opened a general merchandise store in Grapeland. He married Mattie Whitehead. They had five children. The first child was a son, Jim, ‘Son’, Shaver. He married Wilma Robinson. Son was in the sawmill business and was a farmer. Their second son was Bethley. He married Eva Murdock. He was a heavy equipment operator and road commissioner. They moved to Beaumont in the early thirties. The third child was Bernice. She married Norman Brashears. They now reside in Beaumont. The fourth child was Alean. She married George Whitaker. He ran an appliance store inPalestine. The fifth child, and their daughter, was Hattie Lois. She married William Van McConnell, who was owner of Mc- Connell’s Drygoods Store in Crockett. Alexander and Julia’s ninth child, and sixth son, was Sam Lee. His first wife was Myrtle Whitehead. They had one daughter, Myrtle, ‘Daty’.She married Coot Kelly. Sam Lee’s second wife was Etta. Their first child was Odell Shaver, who married Robbie Marsh. He was owner and operator of an auto parts store and garage in Grapeland. Sam and Etta’s second child was Ella Mae. She married Preston Cummings, who retired from Alcoa and now lives south of Crockett. Their third child was Elizabeth, ‘Lizzie’. She married Sherman Sims, who is a retired carpenter and contractor. They live in Latexo.Sam and Etta’s fourth child was Erna Lea. She married a Quin.After a short marriage, they divorced. She later married T. J. Smith, who worked for the prison. Alexander and Julia’s tenth child was Ida. She married Walter Whitehead, who was a farmer and ran a shingle knife, making wood shingles. They had no children of their own, but adopted two boys.
