Sam Kennedy Family History
There was a younger brother who so influenced the lives of the people of North Houston County that he, too, must be included as a builder. He was not connected with the partnership described above, but he was interested in the progress and success of the business. Dr. Sam was an eminent physician whose practice of medicine extended from river to river. He taught school in Augustato help finance his medical education. After graduation from medical school at Galveston, he came to Grapeland to practice his profession. In January, 1918, he was married to the former Eula Riall Hollingsworth, soon after which he was called to serve his country in World War I. After his return home, he continued his chosen profession to serve this area with his medical knowledge and wise counsel. Besides caring for his patients and their families, he was involved in civic groups, and in the Lions Club of which he was a Past President. He was a Past Master of Grapeland Masonic Lodge, also was affiliated with the Arabia Shrine Temple, and was a charter member and Past Patron of Grapeland Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. In his active practice, he was a great influence in this region for nearly 60 years. After his retirement, many of his patients continued to seek his advice and care by going to his home where he, aided by his wife, as an able assistant continued to serve. He took a great deal of pride in watching the accomplishments and rewards of his townspeople. For their assistance and influence in building and promoting Grapeland and North Houston County, I proudly submit this resume.
