Robert Milligan Garrett was born in Wilkinson County, Georgia, July 10, 1822 and was the youngest of ten children born to Jeremiah Garrett and Annie Miller. He married Emily Frances Matthews in Pike County, Alabama, September 14, 1841. Emily Matthews was born in Alabama, October 11, 1824. They had five children while living in Pike County and also had living with them Emily’s widowed mother, Sarah Landrum Matthews Wilkerson and her children by Arthur Matthews. Most of the Matthews families stayed in Pike Co. when Robert M. and Emily F. Garrett moved to Texas in 1851. Other family members living nearby in Pike Co. were John J. Brooks and his wife Nancy Ann Garrett, a sister to R. M. Garrett, H. J. Garrett, Henry A. Garrett, and Joseph Garrett. Robert M. and Emily F. Garrett moved to Texas in 1851 and settled eight miles west of Grapeland in a small community called Pleasant Hill. He worked on Bill 0. Mathews Sr.’s farm. After the family had lived in Houston Co. for awhile, Robert Milligan bought land near Antrim and was living there during the Civil War. Robert Milligan Garrett served in the confederate forces for ‘upwards to two years’. He was in Tucker’s Company of Randall’s Regiment. This was a home guard or local unit in Houston County. Two of his sons, James Arthur and Elijah went to the battle fields and came home with the measles. Their mother caught the measles from them and all three died in 1862. Robert M. and Emily Garrett had eight children, Sarah Ann (b. February 14, 1843), Elijah (b. ?), C. M. (b. 1851), Martha Ellen (b. 1845), Robert J. (b. 1858), William E. (b. 1847), J. Frank (b. 1850), and James Arthur (b. 1846). On April 22, 1865, Robert Milligan Garrett married Ann Mathews; better know as Aunt Ann Garrett. They moved to Grapeland and ‘conducted a hotel’ on the site that later became Kennedy Bros. Store. R. M. Garrett petitioned the U. S. Post Office Department for a post office in the name of Grapevine. He was told that there was already a post office in the state by that name and so the name was changed from Grapevine to Grapeland. He became postmaster in 1885 and served until 1888. R. M. Garrett died in 1890 and is buried in the DavisCemetery.
