Henry Franklin Martin Family History

Henry Franklin, born June 9, 1836, son of John W. and Sarah Dee Martin lived in Alabama in his early years. The family moved west after the 1850 census and stopped in Mississippi and made a crop. Here Henry Franklin bought an English Grammar and wrote his name and date 1852 on the flyleaf. Descendants in California have the book. Henry F. is listed as a farmer on the Cherokee County, Texas 1860 census. In 1862 he enlisted at Crockett and fought in the civil war. June 10, 1863 he married Savannah Jane Weisinger, daughter of Mathias and Leah Caroline Weisinger at their home in Antrim. After the war was over, they farmed at Antrim and also at Ephesus. They have two little daughters buried in unmarked graves in the Milligan Cemetery, They had two sons, John Franklin, born October 25, 1867 and Robert Edward (Bob), born August 18, 1871. In 1884, Henry Franklin died in Cherokee County and is buried near Alto. He not only farmed but preached and at one time was a circuit rider. Edna Sims has a Bible that he carried in his saddlebag. John Franklin married Margaret Jane Blackwell and Robert Edward married Laura Kyle. Savannah, born January 15, 1846, spent most of her later life in the area with her sons. She lived to be 92 years old, died February 1, 1940, and is buried at Antrim cemetery.
