Rose and Penny Herod

Perry Leland Herod, who was more commonly known by the nickname “Penny”, was born October 23, 1913. Penny married the former Rosa Eleanor Shaw (2/1/15), daughter of Laura (Holland) and Henry J. Shaw. They were married on January 18, 1940, by Rev. T. P. Lott. For many years, they worked side-by-side at Kennedy Bros.; he worked on the hardware and grocery side and she on the dry goods side. Penny Herod died at home of a sudden heart attack on April 3, 1975, at the age of 62. Rose died 10 years later, September 25, 1985, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. She was 70 years old at the time of her death. Rose and Penny Herod were the parents of two daughters: Sandra Kay born January 21, 1941, and Nancy Lynn born September 2, 1945. Both grew up in Grapeland and are graduates of Grapeland High School. Sandra married Weldon Bland Kerby, Jr. on September 26, 1959, in Grapeland’s First Baptist Church. (Weldon moved to Grapeland from Henderson, with his family, in 1958.) They have a daughter, D’Linda Kay (7/12/62), and a son, Jeffrey Scott (9/21/67). D’Linda married Wayne Mahaffey on July 31, 1981. Both are teachers and currently (1987) are teaching in Bridge City, Texas. Jeff Kerby graduated from GHS in 1986 and is attending college. In 1968, Sandra and Weldon Kerby moved “back home” from Dallas to become owners and operators of The Grapeland Messenger. Nancy Lynn Herod married Dan Craven of Pennington on March 27, 1964. They are the parents of a son, Dan Lee (12/5/68), and a daughter, Penny Lynn (10/9/71. The Cravens have made their home in Crockett, where he teaches at Crockett High School and she works in the administration office. Dan Lee graduated from Crockett High School in 1987 and is attending Texas A&M University. Penny Lynn is a student at Crockett.
