John Calvin Green Family History

Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Green

John Calvin Green, born in Forsyth, Georgia on March 10, 1847 fought in the Civil War as an infantryman and was a master carpenter and skilled brick mason. His marriage to Mary Lou Browning, born June 29, 1856 in Forsyth was on September 14, 1873. In the early 1880’s, this family moved to Texas and settled in the Enon (now Sunset) Community where John Calvin helped operate the industries powered by the Mill Branch Water Wheel located near San Pedro Creek as it runs into the Grapeland Club Lake. He built wood cabinets and brick chimneys and flues for a trade. One of Mr. Green’s sisters married Henry Ingram and they lived near the Greens in Texas. John Calvin, an accomplished violinist, often entertained his grandchildren with his “fiddle”. Although a dapper young man in his youth, he settled down in later life to become a self-appointed morals tender for the community. He wasted no time in deriding a young maiden for wearing lipstick and the dresses were always too short. His favorite “swear” word was “confound it”. He and his wife and children were charter members of the Sunset Christian Church in 1903. Mary Lou Raney Browning, a very beautiful young lady with big brown eyes, was the daughter of Mary Ann Shockley, born September 11, 1821, and Eli J. Browning who was born March 27, 1822. Mary Lou did her part in teaching the many young grandchildren to read early in life. One of Mary Lou’s brothers came to Texas and was a mail carrier, living in Grapeland with his wife and three daughters. The issue from this marriage was ten children, three of whom died in infancy.
