Sim Finch Family History

Sim and Jerdie Finch 1910

In the mid 1830’s, Sim Finch’s grandfather, Richard B. Finch of Virginia and his wife, Afra Jane of Germany, came to Alabama, now known as the Alabama Crossing, west of Crockett on the Trinity River and homesteaded 1280 acres of land. To this marriage were born four children. Three daughters and one son. They were May, Rosanna, Nancy E., and James Edward. James Edward grew up and married Elizabeth Walling, daughter of James R. Walling and Martha Gordon. They were living in the Daly community, about the end of the Civil War. Their children were Richard, Lee and Will. After Elizabeth died, Edward married widow Katherine Parker Caskey, who had a son named David. Edward and Katherine had three children. They were Lizzie, Webb, and Simon Edward (Sim). Mr. Sim Finch married Miss Jerdie Herod, daughter of Tucker and Louella Virginia Herod, in 1910. They had eight children. They were Ruby, Horace, Estelle, Troy, Roland, Willard, infant daughter, and Lena Sim. Horace died at age three and Willard at age fourteen. Ruby married Calvin Brown and they have two daughters, Marie and Janette. Estelle married Roy McDonald. Troy married Treva Skidmore and they have one daughter, Donna Sue. Roland married Netta Walters and they have three children, Steve, Cindy and Teresa. Lena Sim married Morris Goodnight and they have three children, James, Paul and Staca.
